Clutch - Formular 1



Look to the 16.000 euros clutch manufactured by Sachs at Schweinfurt.

The clutch is indeed operated by the driver only one time when starting. The need advice from the engineers, because the situation is the highest burden for the clutch. Nevertheless, the clutch is needed for (automatic) gear changing. This and pit stops limit its life. That depends on the number of races.

It is a dry clutch and it weighs less than 900 grams and can now transmit up to 900 Nm. In a case of high-strength titanium 4 interim and 3 clutch plates are pressed together by a spring membrane. Earlier this clutch was disengaged by pressing, now by pulling. Due to the enormous temperatures of about 1000°C, carbon is used as friction material exclusely. Even the diaphragm spring is still hot up to 400°C.


All this requires only 111 mm (DTM 140 mm) outer diameter and is permitted up to 22,000 rpm. Thus, the engine can be installed as low as possible. More about the transverse-mounted gearbox in Formula 1 you can read here.. 01/16
